Non-Surgical Treatments for Back, Neck, & Spine Pain

Non-Surgical Treatments for Back, Neck, & Spine Pain

Living with back, neck, or spine pain can make everyday life difficult. Many people worry that surgery is the only answer, but that is not always the case. At Lake Pointe Orthopaedics, Dr. Lauren Bockhorn, a fellowship-trained spine surgeon, believes in starting with the least invasive treatments first. Surgery is only recommended when it is truly the best option for the patient.

Here are some of the most common non-surgical treatments that may help relieve back and spine pain:

Non-Surgical Treatments for Back, Neck, and Spine Pain

1. Physical Therapy

Customized exercises and stretches can strengthen the muscles that support your spine, improve flexibility, and restore movement. Many patients also learn techniques they can continue at home to keep progress going.

2. Activity Modification

Sometimes small changes make a big difference. Adjusting posture, setting up a proper workspace, or limiting heavy lifting can help reduce strain and allow irritated tissues to heal.

3. Anti-Inflammatory Medications

Both over-the-counter and prescription options may help reduce inflammation, stiffness, and swelling around the nerves or joints. These are often used in combination with other treatments for better results.

4. Heat and Cold Therapy

Ice packs can calm down sudden flare-ups, while heating pads or warm showers can relax tight muscles and increase blood flow. Alternating the two can be especially effective.

5. Bracing or Support

Wearing a soft collar or back brace for short periods of time may provide stability, reduce pain during activity, and remind you to avoid movements that cause irritation.

6. Injections

When pain continues despite basic care, injections can offer relief. Guided by X-ray or ultrasound, these include epidural steroid injections (to calm irritated nerves), facet joint injections (to ease painful spinal joints), and nerve blocks (to reduce pain and help pinpoint its source). While not a permanent fix, injections often provide enough relief to make other treatments, like physical therapy, more effective.

7. Chiropractic or Manual Therapy

Hands-on techniques such as spinal adjustments, massage, or mobilization can improve alignment and restore movement. Many patients notice reduced stiffness and improved comfort.

8. Lifestyle and Wellness Approaches

Healthy habits support long-term spine health. Maintaining a strong core, eating nutritious foods, managing stress, and keeping a healthy weight can all reduce the risk of recurring pain.

Comprehensive Care With Our Team

Dr. Lauren Bockhorn offers advanced surgical care when needed, but her first priority is always non-operative treatment. For patients who may benefit from injections or specialized chronic pain management, Dr. Jeffrey Wasserman, our board-certified pain management physician, provides expert care and minimally invasive options.

Dr. Bockhorn sees patients at our Rockwall, Greenville, and Kaufman locations, while Dr. Wasserman is available in both Rockwall, Richardson, and at the Carroll Clinic in Dallas. Together, they ensure that each patient receives the right care at the right time.
