Common Causes of Shoulder and Elbow Pain
TENDON INFLAMMATION OR TEAR
Tendons in the shoulder or elbow can become inflamed or torn due to overuse, repetitive motions, or sudden injuries, resulting in pain and limited mobility.
FRACTURES
Breaks or cracks in the bones of the shoulder or elbow are typically caused by trauma, such as falls, car accidents, or sports injuries. These fractures can result in severe pain, swelling, bruising, and a noticeable loss of function in the affected area.
ARTHRITIS
Wear-and-tear arthritis (osteoarthritis) or inflammatory arthritis (like rheumatoid arthritis) can affect the joints, leading to stiffness, swelling, and discomfort.
TENNIS ELBOW
A condition caused by overuse of the elbow, particularly from repetitive gripping or arm movements, resulting in pain on the outer side of the elbow.
BURSITIS
Inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions the joint, often caused by repetitive stress or pressure, leading to pain and restricted movement.
THROWING INJURIES
Overhead throwing motions can strain the shoulder’s muscles, ligaments, or tendons, causing pain and reduced function over time.
INSTABILITY
Shoulder instability occurs when the joint becomes loose, often due to injury or overuse, which can cause frequent dislocations or a sensation of the shoulder slipping out of place.
OUR PHYSICIANS WILL EVALUATE YOUR SHOULDER OR ELBOW INJURY TO DETERMINE IF YOU ARE A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR SHOULDER OR ELBOW SURGERY.
In some cases, physical therapy and exercise therapy may improve your condition without requiring surgery.
