Common Causes of Shoulder and Elbow Pain

Shoulder anatomy

TENDON INFLAMMATION OR TEAR

Tendons in the shoulder or elbow can become inflamed or torn due to overuse, repetitive motions, or sudden injuries, resulting in pain and limited mobility.

FRACTURES

Breaks or cracks in the bones of the shoulder or elbow are typically caused by trauma, such as falls, car accidents, or sports injuries. These fractures can result in severe pain, swelling, bruising, and a noticeable loss of function in the affected area.

ARTHRITIS

Wear-and-tear arthritis (osteoarthritis) or inflammatory arthritis (like rheumatoid arthritis) can affect the joints, leading to stiffness,  swelling, and discomfort.

TENNIS ELBOW

A condition caused by overuse of the elbow, particularly from repetitive gripping or arm movements, resulting in pain on the outer side of the elbow.

BURSITIS

Inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions the joint, often caused by repetitive stress or pressure, leading to pain and restricted movement.

THROWING INJURIES

Overhead throwing motions can strain the shoulder’s muscles, ligaments, or tendons, causing pain and reduced function over time.

INSTABILITY

Shoulder instability occurs when the joint becomes loose, often due to injury or overuse, which can cause frequent dislocations or a sensation of the shoulder slipping out of place.

OUR PHYSICIANS WILL EVALUATE YOUR SHOULDER OR ELBOW INJURY TO DETERMINE IF YOU ARE A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR SHOULDER OR ELBOW SURGERY.

In some cases, physical therapy and exercise therapy may improve your condition without requiring surgery.

Evaluation and Diagnosis

The first step in addressing shoulder or elbow pain is a thorough evaluation by a physician. During your visit, the specialist will review your symptoms and perform a physical exam to assess strength, stability, and range of motion. Diagnostic tools such as X-rays, MRIs, or other tests may be used to identify internal injuries. Based on these findings, your physician will recommend a personalized treatment plan, which could include at-home exercises, physical therapy, or surgery if necessary.

X-rays

X-RAYS

MRI

MRIS

Blood Tests

ICE, ELEVATION, AND MEDICATION

Your physician may recommend icing and elevating your shoulder to reduce pain and swelling. Ice the affected area 3–5 times daily for 20-minute intervals to minimize inflammation. Elevating the shoulder above heart level can further help reduce swelling. Additionally, your physician may prescribe medications to manage pain and inflammation. Be sure to follow the prescribed dosage and consult your physician before exceeding the recommended amount, as doing so can be harmful.

CORTISONE INJECTIONS

Cortisone injections are a common treatment for shoulder and elbow pain, providing quick relief from swelling, stiffness, and discomfort to help you resume daily activities. These injections are particularly effective for conditions like bursitis, tendon inflammation, and joint pain in these areas. While cortisone injections are excellent for short-term symptom management, they are not typically a long-term solution.

REGENERATIVE MEDICINE INJECTIONS

Regenerative medicine is a cutting-edge, long-term, non-surgical treatment option to address shoulder and elbow pain. This therapy harnesses your body’s natural healing capabilities by concentrating growth factors and healing components from your own blood and injecting them into the injured area. Regenerative medicine can promote faster healing and alleviate symptoms, especially in cases of tendonitis, ligament injuries, and arthritis.

EXERCISE AND PHYSICAL THERAPY

Physical therapy and home exercises may be part of your recovery plan. These exercises are carefully designed to gradually strengthen your shoulder and increase its range of motion. Your recovery’s speed and success will depend on how committed you are to following your physician’s recommendations. In some cases, your physician may suggest using a sling to protect and support your shoulder until it becomes stronger.

Surgical Treatment

SHOULDER ARTHROSCOPY

Arthroscopy is a procedure which allows your shoulder pain specialist (orthopedic surgeon) to inspect and repair a shoulder problem with tiny incisions. Using the arthroscope (a powerful lens and fiber optic light), a surgeon can look into your joint, diagnose its malfunction, and often make necessary repairs. The procedure normally takes 1-2 hours and is done as outpatient.

ARTHROSCOPY IS COMMONLY USED TO TREAT:

Shoulder instability – During the procedure, the surgeon will repair torn ligaments and cartilage to restore stability.

Rotator cuff tears – The surgeon will repair torn rotator cuff tendons with anchors, and sutures.

Bursitis – During the procedure, the surgeon will remove inflamed tissue and bone spurs to alleviate pain.

Arthritis – During the procedure, the surgeon will remove bone spurs and release stiff tissues to decrease pain and increase flexibility.

ADVANTAGES OF ARTHROSCOPY:

  • Generally involves day surgery (no overnight stay)
  • Small incisions
  • Less scaring
  • Less pain
  • Generally speedy recovery

Your shoulder pain specialist will evaluate your condition to determine if you are a good candidate for shoulder arthroscopy. In some cases, physical therapy and exercise therapy may improve your condition without requiring surgery.
