Although wrist injuries are very common among athletes, many times they will go untreated because they don’t inhibit our day to day lives like an injury to our legs might. However, the lack of treatment even to minor wrist injuries can potentially lead to long term chronic issues. Here are some common wrist injuries and options for wrist rehabilitation Rockwall residents trust from Lake Pointe Orthopaedics.

Common Wrist Injuries

Your wrists allow your hands to have full mobility and provide stability in movement. Injury to the ligaments that make up the wrist can result in pain and swelling that limit the mobility of the wrist.

Wrist Sprain

A wrist sprain is an injury to a ligament and the severity will depend on whether the ligament (or ligaments) was torn partially or completely. A sprain is normally caused by a fall, sudden twist, or impact to the body that results in the overstretch or ligament tear. A few symptoms that can occur due to this injury are pain, swelling, bruising, and decreased mobility. The severity of these symptoms will depend on the severity of the sprain.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Frequent strain to the wrist that goes untreated can lead to chronic pain. Capral tunnel syndrome is believed to be a buildup of pressure in the tunnel-like enclosed space where the median nerve and flexor tendons reside.  Some patients will feel numbness, tingling, and weakness of grip is the areas of the hand that are affected by the median nerve.

Treatment Options

In order to receive a proper diagnosis, physicians will perform a number of test to determine the severity of you injury. Blood tests, MRIs, X-Rays, Tinel’s Test, Phalen’s Test, and an Electromyography are all avenues physicians will utilize in order to make a proper diagnosis. If it is determined that your wrist injury is severe enough, it might be recommended that you under-go surgery to repair your wrist and regain proper function. Oftentimes it will be recommended to our patients that surgery be followed by the wrist rehabilitation Rockwall Premier PT provides.  If your injury is determined to be less severe splinting, medication, cortisone injections, or physical therapy maybe be appropriate treatment options.
